Hey there, and welcome back. I'm Doctor Kevin McLaughlin, and you're listening to the Complete Chiropractic Sports And Wellness podcast, coming to you from right here in Durham, North Carolina. Thanks so much for tuning in today. So, today we're tackling something I genuinely love talking about — because I think it makes a real difference for people. We're going to talk about what chiropractors actually do. And more importantly, we're going to bust some of the myths that keep people from getting help they might really need. You know what I hear a lot? People say things like, "Oh, I didn't think I could go to a chiropractor for that." Or, "Isn't chiropractic just for back pain?" And honestly, I get it. There's a lot of confusion out there. So let's clear some of that up right now. Myth number one — and this is probably the biggest one — is that chiropractors only treat back pain. Now, here's the thing. Back pain is absolutely something we help with, and we're really good at it. But the spine is connected to everything. Your nervous system runs through your spine and out to every part of your body. So when something is off in your spine, it can affect your neck, your shoulders, your hips, even your headaches. We work with people dealing with sciatica, sports injuries, tension headaches, knee pain, shoulder issues — the list goes on. Chiropractic care is really about helping your entire musculoskeletal system work the way it's supposed to. Now, myth number two. This one I hear pretty often too — that chiropractic adjustments are dangerous or painful. I completely understand why some people feel nervous about that cracking sound. It sounds intense, right? But here's what's actually happening. That sound is just gas releasing from the fluid around your joints. It's the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. The adjustment itself is a very controlled, precise movement. Most people feel relief almost immediately. Some people feel a little sore the next day, kind of like after a good workout. But dangerous? When performed by a licensed chiropractor, it's one of the safest forms of conservative care available. And myth number three — that once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to go forever. I want to be really clear about this. That is not true. Every patient is different. Some people come in for a short course of care, they feel better, and they're on their way. Others choose to continue with periodic maintenance visits because it helps them stay active and feel their best. That's a personal choice. We work with you to figure out what makes sense for your life and your goals. There is no one-size-fits-all plan here. So, what can you start doing today? First, pay attention to your body. If you've been dealing with persistent aches, stiffness when you wake up, headaches that won't quit, or pain that's been hanging around for more than a few weeks — don't just push through it. Your body is trying to tell you something. Second, think about your posture. Most of us are sitting more than ever, looking down at phones, hunching over desks. Even small changes — like lifting your screen to eye level or taking a short walk every hour — can make a real difference over time. And if any of this sounds familiar — if you've been dealing with something and you're not sure where to turn — I'd really encourage you to come in and just have a conversation. At Complete Chiropractic Sports And Wellness, we do a thorough evaluation before we ever recommend any treatment. We want to understand what's going on with you specifically. No pressure, no guessing. Just a real conversation and a clear plan. Chiropractic care isn't mysterious. It's not scary. It's really just about helping your body move better, feel better, and do all the things you love doing — whether that's playing with your kids, hitting the gym, or just getting through the workday without your neck killing you. Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me today. I really do appreciate it. If you have questions, or if you're ready to schedule a visit, reach out to us at Complete Chiropractic Sports And Wellness here in Durham. We'd love to meet you. Until next time — take care of yourself, and we'll talk soon.
