Hey there, welcome back. I'm Doctor Kevin McLaughlin, and you're listening to the Complete Chiropractic Sports and Wellness podcast, coming to you from right here in Durham, North Carolina. Today we're talking about something I get asked about more and more — shockwave therapy. And if you've never heard of it, or maybe you've heard the name and thought it sounded a little intimidating, stick with me. Because this could honestly be a game changer for you, especially if you've been dealing with one of those nagging injuries that just... won't... go away.
You know what I hear a lot in my office? People come in and they say, Doctor McLaughlin, I've tried everything. I've rested it. I've iced it. I've done stretches. I've had massages. And this thing still hurts. Whether it's heel pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, or something in the elbow — it's just stuck. And I get it. That kind of chronic, stubborn pain is incredibly frustrating. It wears on you. So today I want to talk about why that happens, and how shockwave therapy fits into the solution.
Here's the thing about those long-lasting aches. A lot of the time, they're rooted in what we call tendon issues. Tendons are those tough, fibrous tissues that connect your muscles to your bones. And tendons — especially when they've been overloaded or irritated over and over again — they don't always heal the way we'd hope. The tissue can become disorganized, and the area can actually lose some of its normal blood supply over time. That's why something like plantar fasciitis, or Achilles tendon pain, or rotator cuff irritation can drag on for months, sometimes years. Your body wants to heal. It just needs a little help getting the process restarted.
And that's exactly where shockwave therapy comes in. Now, the name sounds intense, but let me break this down for you. Shockwave therapy uses acoustic sound waves — think of them like focused pulses of energy — that we direct into the affected tissue. These waves essentially stimulate the area at a very deep level. They help break up calcified deposits, they stimulate blood flow, and they actually encourage your body to begin a fresh healing response. We're essentially waking up tissue that has gone a little dormant in the healing process. Most people feel a sensation during the treatment — it can be a little intense in the moment — but it's short, it's controlled, and most patients tolerate it really well.
Here's what's interesting. Shockwave therapy is not brand new. It's been used in sports medicine and orthopedic settings for quite a while. Professional athletes have used it to get back on the field faster. And now it's much more accessible to everyday people — folks like you who just want to get back to walking without heel pain, or lifting without shoulder discomfort, or playing with their kids without that nagging knee acting up.
So what can you do right now? A few things. First, don't just keep waiting and hoping that stubborn pain will resolve on its own. If it's been there for more than six to eight weeks, it's worth getting evaluated. Second, keep moving as much as you comfortably can. Gentle movement promotes circulation, and circulation is important for healing. Third, if you've been relying on anti-inflammatory medications long term just to get through the day, that's a sign something deeper needs to be addressed — not just managed.
When should you come see us? Honestly, if any of this sounds familiar to you — if you've got pain in your heel, your Achilles, your shoulder, your elbow, your knee, or your hip that has been hanging around for weeks or months — come in and let us take a look. We'll do a thorough evaluation, figure out what's actually going on, and talk through whether shockwave therapy makes sense for your specific situation. It's not the right fit for everyone, but for the right patient, the results can be really remarkable.
